After your surgery, you can expect to have about an 8-12 week recovery. Afterwards, you may have to go through some physical therapy. Eorthopod.com offers some great information on what to expect pre and post surgery and you can read about it here http://www.eorthopod.com/public/patient_education/6464/ankle_fusion.html.
You may also expect to have special shoes after the surgery or insoles that will help with your range of motion after the foot is fused. If you are a walker, I would prepare yourself to have some down time and maybe the relaxation will be good. Otherwise, after the healing time and rehabilitation, you should be be back to your regular walking activities.
Did this help?

Hi,
Having had multiple ankle fusion surgeries. Be prepared for the problems that can happen nonunion is a big point that might cause problems. It is a surgery and not one to be taken lightly. Mine finally did work but now I have more problems and nobody seems to know what to do I am to the point that they won't do surgery because my ankle is pretty much shot. It is painful and there is always a good chance it will take the first time.
