Questions abound regarding dry humping, dry sex and dry intercourse. It is most often a question asked by girls and women, wanting to know if they can be pregnant when engaging in "dry sex".
The terms has been defined in many ways, depending on the person asking, and I wanted to break through the barriers and actually talk about the "embarrassing" aspects of what these terms actually mean.
What are you actually doing with your partner when you are doing anything "dry" in the sex-realm? Let's take the slang out of our questions, and talk about these taboo topics in the name of sexual health and wellness.
Sexual Health Quiz: Test Your Knowledge on this "Dry" Subject!
1. How would you describe/define the following terms?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
2. What specific behaviors am I engaging in if I do any of the following?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
3. Can you "get" pregnant from any of the following sexual activities?
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
4. Can you spread or contract an STI/STD from any of the following sexual behaviors? (STI/STD = sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- Dry Humping
- Dry Sex
- Dry Intercourse
ANSWERS:
1. Dry= No Bodily Fluid Contact
The word "dry" means that there is no bodily fluid exchange or contact, including fluids or lubrication from the penis, vagina, anus or mouth. These specifically can include pre-ejaculatory fluid ("pre-cum"), ejaculatory fluid or "ejaculation" or "cum", vaginal lubrication or vaginal secretions.
"Dry humping" and "dry sex" can be summed up by using the term: "outercourse".
There is actually no such thing as "dry intercourse", as penetration can never be considered a "dry" activity as there is natural lubrication from your body that is considered a "bodily fluid".
2. Outercourse can include:
- massaging, touching
- masturbation
- body rubbing, humping or "going through motions" of sex while fully clothed (genitals are fully covered)...most commonly called "dry humping"
Outercourse can not include:
- penetration of penis into vagina, anus or mouth
- body rubbing while clothed, but some "slippage" of clothing (underwear, specifically)
- ejaculation near vagina, even while covered, with chance of semen spilling over clothing
3. No, Outercourse would not lead to pregnancy
As explained above, outercourse does not involve the contact or exchange of any bodily fluids, and therefore, would not create a risk for pregnancy
4. Yes, Outercourse may still carry the risk of spreading or contracting an STI/STD
The word "dry" is important when talking about pregnancy and STIs/STDs, as Outercourse is a Good Safer Sex Option, but is not 100% "safe".
Safer Sex is any sexual behavior that reduces your risk for infection or pregnancy. Although most STDs/STIs are spread through exchange of bodily fluids, some are transmitted from skin-to-skin contact (meaning: you don't have to have intercourse/penetration to become infected with an STD/STI). The skin-to-skin contact through outercourse can be a risk for STD/STI.
Lastly,
What are the Benefits of Outercourse (for two consenting adults?)
- Pleasurable form of sexual expression and intimacy
- Type of "safer sex" without need for contraception (for pregnancy prevention)
- Lower risk for contracting or spreading STIs or STDs (sexually transmitted infections or diseases)
- No risk for pregnancy
- It can be a sexual behavior that is pleasurable, exciting and not stress-inducing (from the point of view of women, wondering if they are pregnant)

hi i know a lot of people are asking the same thing i have a different question
if you dry hump and as a result you get stimulated sexually, does that result in a loss of virginity?
question more directly asked is dry humping considered sex if you do it are you still a virgin if you never had real sexual intercourse with penetration?

About three weeks ago my boyfriend and I dry humped. He had on briefs and i am unsure if his jeans were zipped up or not. I am almost positive I had on a thong and I was about two-three days into my period so a tampon as well (if I remember that incorrectly then I had on regular panties and a pad which is even better so let's just go worse case scenario here with the thing and tampon) I also had a skirt on and I am unsure if that was covering my parts or not. He never ejaculated but there was a small circle of precum after the fact. I have read that so long as he peed since his last ejaculation, his precum should contain virtually little to no sperm (which he had peed since he last fully ejaculated). I noticed pink on my toilet paper about perhaps a week after the fact and again around two weeks after, but spotting when I am not on my period is not something I am a total stranger to I believe. I am stressing out so hard that I might be pregnant, I have been watching my body like a hawk now. From what I have read about early pregnancy symptoms, I have not noticed any. I am a little pudgy so I have been monitoring my stomach and weight which the feel and dynamic of my fat tummy literally dramatically changes every day normally and has continued to do so. I am just terrified, I could take a pregnancy test, but I think I am going to wait until my next period (which should come in about a week, but I understand stress effects it, so at this rate, I should get it in 2078 haha). Any advice or calming reassuring words would be nice. Thank you!

Hello Anonymous,
Implantation bleeding is brown to pink colored spotting. It is scanty does not increase to a flow. It occurs about 6 to 12 days after conception.
You would not have become pregnant if you only engaged in dry humping.
If you have engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse since your last normal period, there is a chance you are pregnant and this could be implantation bleeding.
Take a pregnancy test if you do not have a normal period this month.

20hours ago my boyfriend and I humped, I had my underwear on and he had nothing on. Before he ejaculated we imitated the penetration action and then I moved a bit up and he ejaculated, I am 90%sure the cum didn't come on my underwear, but if it did, can it lead to pregnancy?? Also I had that underwear on for about an hour after that but had washed genitals thoroughly Please help as I can take the contraceptive pills to avoid it!

Hello stacy2909,
By the time you read my reply, it will be too late to take an emergency contraceptive pill.
As long as you were wearing underwear the entire time and there was no actual penetration of his penis into your vagina, there was no risk for pregnancy.
Sperm cannot get through clothing. Again, there was never a risk for pregnancy.

can you get pregnant from dry humping with clothes on while you are on your period? i noticed that the front of my shorts were slightly moist but he said that he never did anything so i don't know if it was just from sweat or my own fluids. i was on my period at the time and then several days later i got off it. i know that they say that a period is the sign you aren't pregnant but if you are on your period when the dry humping is taking place what does that mean? i have been off my period two days and i noticed a little blood this morning whenever i wiped and then some was on my liner. but that was it... is this normal after periods. i have never had penetrating sex before and we were fully clothed.
