Venous lake on my lip

I have this dark blue/purple lesion on my lip that keeps getting bigger. I went to see the dermatologist and she said that it's a venous lake. She said it was nothing I had to worry about. Does anyone else have one or know of someone who does? If so, what was your/their treatment?

-J ... All those replies on here have helped alot. I now have called in and said I want to try laser first and go from there. But she made the surgery sound so small, but glad to hear of all those who have done either, or. it really helped me make up my mind. I sure will ask about this procedure u mentioned. Thanks -EW.

Hi, I also have one on my top lip, rite in the middle and yes have had it for years but have only just found out what it is, and had it checked out today. The skin specialist I saw told me that yes she could do laser but cannot guarantee that it would work and would need more then one treatment at 150 to 200 a treatment and yes I would have to pay for it, or I could have it surgically removed and that I wouldn't need to pay. Of course I said surgery cause she couldn't guarantee me that laser would work and said that the surgery wouldn't leave a scar, cause they would cut underneath my lip. But man reading up on all the experiences some of u had, man I don't know what to do now. Should I try a few laser treatments and if that don't work then go for surgery, oh what to do what to do. I'm from Winnipeg, MB, so if anybody knows of a great laser treatment center, cause they did send me to Pan-am clinic, to see a plastic surgeon, please let me know, Thanks!!

EW- Does your lip bleed at all when it gets too dry. Because if it does than the laser procedure would be medically necessary. At least that is why my procedure , Cutera cooltip laser; was covered by my Insurance. -J

No my lip has never bled. I was supriced to hear in some of the replies that theirs have bled. Does that mean mine is too deep and laser wouldn't work?

This blog helped me so much I wanted to add my experience for others. I had a bulbous, protruding venous lake on my lower lip. Several years ago a dermatologist said it could be removed by cutting it out but I didn't want the possibility of a twisted scar. Then I read here of the positive experiences people had with the correct laser treatment. Luckily, I found a doctor who seemed to have all the latest lasers and specialized in removing all kinds of unsightly skin problems. Over the phone I was told he would be using his Cutera CoolGlide laser.

Here's the thing I wanted to share. When he took one look at my lip he said my venous lake was so big he recommended an alternative treatment to the laser. He said in my case an older tool would be more effective than the newer one. He said cauterizing the vessel with an electric cautery tool would work best. The cautery would go deeper and "dry up" the vessel in one treatment, whereas the laser would take several in my case because of the size and depth of my venous lake. Imagine half a green pea sitting on my lip, or just a little smaller.

So, he numbed my lip with a tiny needle of lidocaine. Next, I could smell the burning smell as he cauterized my vessel with the electric needle but I could not feel a single thing. When he was done I had a little scab and some swelling, but I could see the venous lake was completely gone! Yay--magic! My lip looks normal again and I am SO happy. I had it done yesterday, and my lip really isn't even sore today.

Anonymous, thank you so much for this great information. Mine wasn't that big and the Cutera coolglide laser worked for me. Mine has been completely gone for approximately two years. No signs of it, no tenderness, nothing. But I am going to make note of what you did just in case I have the misfortune of getting another venous lake. I like how you said it didn't hurt, one tiny injection of lidocaine, doctor used a electric needle and cauterized the vessel. Information is gold! Judi

I had surgery done on my venous lake which was rather large. I had it 10 years plus. So far it has been very swollen for 5 days. i was searching for anything I can do to hurry this bruising and swelling up. It has not been painful with the procedure but I will not go out in public yet. I am using arnica pills and the topical under my lip. The bleeding has settled below the lip. I had used ice and still use advil for swelling( practically all of it is gone).I had my surgery done by an Oral Surgeon who is also a plastic surgeon in Stevensville, MD. on the eastern shore.

Hi Anonymous,
Keep us posted on your recovery. I'm positive sharing your experience will be helpful to someone considering surgery for their own VL, to help them know what to expect.
Hope you can get back to going out in public soon.
Take care,
Christine

Hi Christine,
I have wonderful news to report after my VL surgery. It is gone, gone,Gone!! I am delighted by the outcome. I wish I had done it much earlier. I do have a small scar inside the lip and when I am nervous I start biting it (that caused the ugly thing in the first place). I have stopped doing that and have absolutely no trouble with it. I would encourage anyone to go ahead with the procedure providing the oral surgeon has done them before. And please be sure to keep ice on it however long they advise even if it does not hurt. Then you won't have to hid away like me. Thanks for the kind words Christine.

I have a pretty large VL on my lower lip, and I'm wondering if anyone is the NY area, and has had success. A few years ago I had 2 laser treatments, but it didn't do any good. I just saw a doctor who wants to remove it with surgery. It would involve removing a portion of my lip. He said it would leave only a small scar, but I feel extremely apprehensive. I would like to try laser again even though the VL has grown quite a bit since the last attempts. The doctor that I use does not use Cutera laser. Does anyone in the NY area know where I can get that treatment? Any other suggestion.. I'm desperate !!
