Dr. Berkus shares the best way for a woman with an eating disorder to advocate herself while in the doctor's office.

Dr. Berkus:
One thing she can do is to again, feel comfortable with that person. She has to form a relationship and what she brings to that relationship is honesty. So if she is isn’t willing or can’t feel comfortable enough to be honest with her physician she needs to state that right upfront because this is a team effort and if she doesn’t feel comfortable in that situation it’s going to be harder for her to get better.

So one thing is to try to understand what difficulty she is having. Is she in touch with feelings? Can she be honest about her behaviors, and can she value that person’s advice and sort of agreement to keep things private that need to be kept private?
