Dr. Gonzalez describes a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery.

Dr. Gonzalez:
Well, the way that we know if a patient is a candidate is through measuring their BMI, their Body Mass Index. The Body Mass Index is your weight in kilos over your height in meters squared, but you can find charts and you can find computer programs on the Internet that you can plug in your height and your weight and it will tell you your BMI. BMI, we are looking for a BMI of 40 or greater or a BMI of 35 to 39 with one serious medical problem. That would be diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea. But if your BMI is 40 or greater, you don’t need to have any medical problems to qualify.
