The amount of calories that you can burn is dependent upon your body weight, intensity of the workout, conditioning level and metabolism. Across the board, running burns the most calories. Running one mile in 5 ½ minutes burns between 1060 to 1600 calories. Taking that same mile a bit slower at 12 minutes burns between 470 to 745 calories.

The numbers for running are grossly overstated. Running 1 mile burns closer to 100 calories, not 1,000!
